New FDA Warning for Popular Antibiotics Cipro and Levaquin
The following drugs are included in the new FDA warning, they are all part of a group of medications called fluoroquinolones: Cipro, Factive, Levaquin, Avelox, Noroxin, Floxin.

“The US Food and Drug Administration is advising that serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs generally outweigh the benefits for patients with sinusitis, bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.”
“An FDA safety review has shown that fluoroquinolones associated with disabling and potentially permanent serious side effects. These side effects involve tendons, muscles, joints nerves, and the central nervous system”
According to the FDA, these drugs can cause:
- Tendonitis and percent tendon rupture
- Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting
- Arthritis of the joints
- Headaches, anxiety
- Retinal detachment of the eye
- Allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock
- Seizures, psychosis
- Depression, suicidal thoughts
- Kidney and liver failure
Most common symptoms:
- Pain
- Numbness
- Burning, tingling, weakness
- Vertigo like balance problems
According to the FDA, these drugs should not be used unless every other option has failed. Several of our patients have reported pain and confusion while on Cipro. While antibiotics are necessary, we should look to the natural choices first, none of which have side effects that can kill you, like these.
